The newly inaugurated Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, Comrade Akeem Abas, has announced that journalists in the state will begin a comprehensive Artificial Intelligence (AI) training programme by mid-January 2026.
The initiative aims to equip media professionals with modern digital competencies and boost newsroom innovation and productivity.
Abas made the announcement on Thursday during a live appearance on New Frontier Television, a cable station owned by the Nigerian Baptist Convention.
In a statement issued by the Council’s Secretary, Dayo Adu, the NUJ chairman stated that the training will focus on practical AI applications, including content creation tools, data-driven reporting, fact-checking techniques, multimedia enhancement, and audience engagement strategies.
He explained that acquiring such skills has become crucial as journalism continues to evolve globally, noting that AI literacy will not only enhance relevance in the changing media landscape but also open new opportunities for alternative income streams for journalists.
Abas added that the Oyo NUJ leadership has already finalized discussions with technology experts who will serve as facilitators for the training sessions.
He disclosed that the programme would be executed in batches to ensure that all chapels within the council benefit.
The chairman reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritizing professional development, welfare, and inclusiveness among journalists in the state.
He emphasized that the union would continue to embrace innovative ideas that strengthen media credibility and elevate journalistic standards.
Assuring members of more capacity-building initiatives in the months ahead, Abas expressed confidence that the upcoming AI training would mark the beginning of a transformative year for journalism practice in Oyo State.
